Most students are “first timers” and need thorough and expert guidance from someone skilled. What’s more, teachers may not be available to the students all the time, and in fact, may have even less time at the end of the semester. dissertations sample can be a blessing for students because most students are not familiar with the writing and formatting skills of thesis research and writing. dissertation sample can be used… Continue

I was hoping to find the "hatchling" who left this piece of paper in lieu of a tip at the restaurant I work at. I was interested in the "hatchfest" but I had to work. I had heard it was a bunch of yippie-trustafarians networking w/ working artists but all of the working artists I know were, well working. Suffice it to say that the "tip' proved me right. The next time we have a hatchfest in Asheville, I would like to teach a class on manners and etiquette, something that goes a lot farther than a… Continue

If you have been to see a movie in the past few years, you are probably familiar with Nick Hiatt's work. As a digital environment artist, Hiatt has designed backgrounds and computer graphics for films such as Hancock, Beowulf and the upcoming disaster movie 2012.
Currently working with Tim Burton on his remake of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, Hiatt took a break from his busy career to talk to HATCH at… Continue

Joe Wilcox, left, discusses HATCH Asheville with fellow designer Evan Twyford.
Even though their event badges say "mentor," industrial designers Evan Twyford and Joe Wilcox prefer a different term: geeks.
"We are nerds and geeks," said Wilcox, who works as a toy inventor and… Continue

In the world of food and travel, the "slow movement" has become synonymous with ecologically friendly and ethical production methods. For HATCH's fashion mentors, slow design "looks at longer cycles of human behavior, sustainability, and manufacturing with local/regional materials and technologies," according a display at the Front Gallery, where the mentors presented their work on Thursday, 6 p.m. The reception also featured a demonstration of Elisa Jimenez's "spontaneous fitting" of Brooke Pri… Continue

To Judy Krant and John Sisti, “Made in China” means two very different things.
Krant wrote and directed a film of that name which premiers at HATCH Asheville tonight at 7 p.m.
Sisti, on the other hand, fears the impact outsourcing might have on the survival of the American film industry.
“I hope the country takes some initiative in keeping this an American industry,” he said. “Right now, we know how to do it better. I don’t know if that will last.”
Outsourcing and independent distribution we… Continue

Yoshiko Wada began a silk workshop this morning at 10, inviting students to use old or scrap pieces of cloth to create brand new works of art. Wada focuses her creativity on shibori and dyeing.
Some students began sewing strips and pieces of silk together, creating a collage of overlapping and dissecting shapes, leaving spaces between pieces. They will then encapsulate two semi-transparent sheets of a synthetic material around the larger piece and apply a cornstarchy substance, bonding the enti… Continue

The woman smiled as flames danced around her.
As audience members jokingly told her she was on fire, VJ Robb Pope quickly adjusted his software and the projected video of a forest contoured itself to her body.
“VJing is freeform, spontaneous and fluid,” Pope told a crowd of about 25 at an afternoon presentation.
VJing, the art of mixing video live at an event, originated in the ‘60s and ‘70s, and often was abstract and psychedelic, Pope said.
Using relatively simple equipment, primarily a la… Continue
Yes, one more post about Elisa Jimenez. I caught up with the designer, artist, and former Project Runway contestant and we talked about her personal journey into fashion, her artwork, and mentoring at HATCH.
Meet Jimenez and her fellow mentors Yoshiko Wada and Mary Gehlhar at the fashion discipline's opening reception on Thursday, April 16 at 6 p.m. in the Asheville Arts Council's Front Gallery (11 Biltmore Avenue). The show features work by the mentors as well as some… Continue

I attended the discussion with Elisa Jimenez yesterday afternoon at the Arts Council and at some point I couldn't hold back from telling her how much I loved her in Project Runway - A show she called a "conceptual art performance." Then I asked her a question about her process and how she works one on one with a client. She proceeded to pull out a piece of material she had stained and infused with oils and essences and all sorts of wonderful stuff. She gracefully clipped the material with holes,… Continue
